Steel Roof Layers

Steel Core

The very core of all our metal roofing materials contains a heart of steel. Steel is strong, lightweight, and durable. Properly protected by layers of coatings, steel is extremely long lasting in any environment.

Forged Steel Durability

Steel is an ideal construction material due to its high strength, and ability to be formed into a variety of shapes and sizes. Steel can be recycled infinitely without losing strength, and steel products generally last many times the lifespan of other materials.

Galvalume / Galvanized Corrosion Shield

To provide a long-term layer of protection against corrosion, all of our steel roofing systems are coated with either a Galvalume (55% zinc / 45% aluminum) or Galvanized (100% Zinc) coating. These coatings provide a proven shield against the elements. Used alone without paint, these coatings provide 25-40 years of protection against corrosion With paint, they act as a second layer of protection for the life of the roof.

Pretreatment

Preparation for the paint begins with a zinc-chromate pre-treatment bath. This preparation bath imparts a self healing protection against oxidation, forming a reaction on the metal surface. The reaction is attributed to the presence of hexavalend and trivalent in the coating. When treated with this coating, the steel coils are also protected before being primed and painted.

High Performance Primer

Applied before the baked on paint, each of our systems is carefully primed to ensure a lifelong adhesion of the upcoming paint. Priming varies depending on the paint type and roof system, ensuring the highest quality possible.

Baked on Paint

Each of our painted systems are provided by trusted industry leaders, and are engineered to be the best in the industry. Paint systems are applied using a continuous conveyor coating line for consistency and durability. Paint warranties usually include a 40-45 year finish warranty and a 30 year fade & chalk warranty.

There are two main types of paint systems Best Buy Metals utilizes on our roofing:

Silicone-Modified Polyester: A silicone protected coating designed specifically for steel roofing and siding. This is an industry leading formula that far exceeds older polyester, acrylic, and other paint technologies.

Specifications:

We use silicone-modified polyester (SMP) paints from two of the most highly reputable paint companies in the industry: AkzoNobel and Valspar.

AkzoNobel was founded in 1871 by Alfred Nobel (founder of the Nobel peace prize). AkzoNobel manufactures the Ceram-A-Star 1050® paint system, which largely dominates the metal roof pain industry due to it's quality, consistency, and colorfast properties.

The Valspar Corporation has manufactured paint since 1806. It remained a small manufacturer until the last 30 years, and has grown immensely since that time. Valspar manufactures the WeatherX paint system. This sytem isn't as known or established as Ceram-A-Star 1050®, but is based on 200 years of Valspar paint experience, and has been thoroughly tested in laboratories and in the field.

Kynar 500 / Hylar 5000: A PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoropolymer) protected coating containing a minimum of 70% polyvinylidene resin. Often specified by architects around the globe, Kynar/Hylar is known across the industry, and has been in use over 45 years.

Specifications:

Our Kynar / Hylar metal roof coatings are provided by Akzo-Nobel, BASF, or Valspar, depending on the type of steel roofing.

Other Finishes - Stone Coated Steel Roofing

We provide two stone coated steel roofing systems: Decra and Metro. Both use similar coatings: zinc-aluminum, acrylic primer, basecoat, stone granules, clear acrylic overcoat. Decra features slightly larger stone granulars than Metro, but both systems retain the same look and quality.
